Efflore Releases New Album Elegies of the Island
Efflore – Elegies of the Island: Taiwanese Ghost Stories Meet Black Metal
Taiwanese “Oriental Black Metal” band Efflore have released their new album, Elegies of the Island, bringing together black metal, Taiwanese folklore, ghost stories and traditional Eastern musical elements.
Formed around a distinctive cultural approach to extreme metal, Efflore draw inspiration from Taiwanese folk beliefs, local legends and supernatural tales. Their music incorporates pentatonic melodies, gong and traditional instrumental colours alongside the darker and more aggressive foundations of black metal.
That identity also extends to the stage. Efflore approach their live performances with a ritualistic Eastern aesthetic, creating an atmosphere closer to a spirit-summoning ceremony or dark musical theatre than a conventional metal performance.
Seven Ghost Stories from Taiwan
Elegies of the Island takes this concept even further. The album gathers seven Taiwanese ghost stories and urban legends, with each song exploring tales connected by wrongful death, resentment, injustice and unfinished sorrow.
Rather than treating these stories simply as sources of horror, Efflore use them to explore the darker side of Taiwan's cultural memory. Ghosts, monsters and restless spirits become reflections of grief and injustice, giving the album a narrative identity deeply connected to the island's folklore.
The record also contains a hidden closing track, conceived by the band as a rite of deliverance.
“Siu Niu” – Sorrow, Rage and a Restless Spirit
Alongside the album, Efflore have released a music video for “Siu Niu,” one of Elegies of the Island's most emotionally charged tracks.
The song is inspired by the story of Chen Shou-Niang, a legendary woman who later became known in Taiwanese folklore as a formidable female ghost. Her story revolves around betrayal, oppression and injustice, ultimately leading to her death and transformation into a restless, vengeful spirit.
Efflore translates the legend into extreme metal through violent black metal passages, mournful melodies and a strong ritualistic atmosphere. The accompanying video expands on the narrative, focusing not only on supernatural horror but also on the pain, dignity and anger behind the story.
In this sense, “Siu Niu” is more than another ghost story. It becomes an elegy about grievance, resistance and memory, giving a modern musical voice to a legend that continues to survive within Taiwanese folklore.
Black Metal Through a Taiwanese Perspective
With Elegies of the Island, Efflore establish a musical world that feels closely connected to where they come from. Taiwanese ghost stories, Eastern ritual aesthetics and traditional musical colours exist alongside the aggression and darkness of black metal without losing their cultural identity.
The result is an album that approaches extreme metal from a distinctly Taiwanese perspective, turning the island's haunted stories into a dark and theatrical musical experience.
Efflore's Elegies of the Island is out now, and the music video for “Siu Niu” is available on YouTube.
