Black Royal Release New Video for “Extremophiles” Ahead of Upcoming Album
Finnish death metal band Black Royal have released a new single, “Extremophiles,” accompanied by an official music video. The track is taken from their upcoming fourth studio album, Abyssian, which is scheduled for release on October 30.
Formed in Tampere, Finland, in 2013, Black Royal released two self-funded EPs before signing with Suicide Records. Their debut full-length album, Lightbringer, arrived in 2018 and was named one of the year's top 10 albums by Finnish magazine Inferno. The band also performed at Tuska Open Air that year.
In February 2020, Black Royal followed up with Firebride, combining the crushing weight of death metal and sludge with memorable rock choruses. Their third album, Earthbound, was released in October 2022 through M-Theory Audio.
Black Royal's sound draws on the raw aggression of Scandinavian death metal and the slow, heavy riffs of sludge. Their lyrics also take inspiration from Scandinavian and Sámi mythology. MetalStorm once described the band's music as a blend of Entombed's Wolverine Blues era and Corrosion of Conformity, a comparison that still captures much of their sound.
For Abyssian, the band returned to Studio Watercastle, working once again with Arttu Sarvanne on the recordings. The lineup has also seen some changes in recent years. Bassist Petri Kantola left the band in 2023, with Juuso subsequently taking over the role. In 2025, Dmitri “Dimmu” Martinov stepped in as the band's bassist.
The new single's title, “Extremophiles,” is intriguing in its own right. The term refers to organisms capable of surviving in extreme environments, including conditions involving intense heat, pressure, or acidity. Combined with the dark connotations of the album title Abyssian, it hints at the harsh atmosphere listeners may encounter on the upcoming record.
Black Royal's fourth studio album, Abyssian, is due out October 30. Until then, the “Extremophiles” music video offers a first glimpse into the band's next chapter.
