Morsrot - Morsrot (EP Review)
Malta / Germany- Independent Record - 2025
"Before I dive into my thoughts, let me share a brief introduction to the band. The band was formed in Malta and has been operating (or active) in Berlin, the capital of Germany, for some time now. So, without further ado, let's let the band introduce themselves in their own words:"
"Morsrot, a band originating in Malta and currently operating out of Berlin, is bringing a breath of fresh air to the next generation of heavy metal music. In 2025, the group was selected by Michael Berberian from Season of Mist to win the Wacken Metal Battle Malta, making them the first band to represent Malta at Wacken Open Air. Known for their impressive stage presence, Morsrot has shared the stage with many highly respected bands."
"The band says this about the 5-song Wacken Battle playlist:
'This playlist brings our latest single together with the songs that formed our Wacken setlist. It isn't a standard EP, but rather a collection that reflects where Morsrot is right now: a young band based in Berlin and starting to make a name for themselves internationally after representing Malta at Wacken 2025. The tracklist reflects both our heaviest moments and the songs that connected with the Wacken audience, showcasing the energy we bring to the stage and the studio."
"So, what do I think?"
"It's genuinely difficult to categorize the style of metal that Morsrot plays. The introductory track for the setlist is the band's latest single, 'Primrose Path'. It's a song built on groovy foundations, occasionally taking on an alternative metal vibe. They've skillfully blended both fierce and calm vocals. The track raises the tempo with transitions that are not quite as intense as death metal, but carry a similar aggression."
"'The Bund', on the other hand, is a complete mixture of alternative rock and metalcore, I'd say. It’s a dynamic and flowing track that incorporates progressive elements. It's hard to call this strictly 'heavy metal,' but the energy level is incredibly high. The vocalist performs across a remarkably wide range here: the noticeable use of clean vocals bordering on a pop style, rasping passages close to screaming, and growl-style vocals often heard in metalcore genres are all utilised together. The chaotic sections in the song’s sound truly stand out."
"'Centrefold', also from the same EP, opens with a distinctly classic heavy metal feel. It's even possible to sense touches of German speed/heavy/power metal in certain moments. 'Do Us Part', on the other hand, is more melodic than the other tracks, dominated by brutal vocals, fast-paced, and occasionally reminiscent of a Swedish death metal atmosphere. The 5-track setlist closes with 'In My Own Skin'. Heavy metal tones are still prevalent in this track, concluding with a powerful finish driven by brutal-tinged, growling vocals."
"In short, Morsrot is a very promising band. They certainly have a long road ahead, but their potential is evident. If you ask me, setting a slightly clearer musical style and moving forward in that direction might be a more solid step for them. Just a small critique, of course..."
"Looking forward to sharing the next reviews with you."
