Dethonator – Carrying the Torch of Epic Heavy Metal
When we talk about the New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal, one band that deserves recognition is Dethonator. Hailing from London and the South of England, this quartet has been keeping the flame of classic heavy metal alive with an unmistakable epic spirit.
The band originally formed in the East Midlands under the name Kaleb during the early days of the NWOTHM movement. By 2009, they had reinvented themselves as Dethonator and have since become a staple of the UK’s metal and rock venue circuit. Their shows have taken them across the country — from London and the South East to the Midlands and North — and even across the Channel for tours in Europe.
A Melodic but Fierce Sound
At its core, Dethonator’s sound is rooted in classic, fully melodic heavy metal: soaring clean vocals, strong lyrical themes, and lead guitar melodies that stick with you. But what makes them stand out is the way they weave in influences from Thrash, Progressive, and even Extreme Metal. This adds depth and aggression to their music without ever losing the anthem-like, sing-along quality that defines their ethos: “to make anthemic songs with an epic tone for all metalheads to enjoy, and to deliver high-quality live performances.”
To date, the band has released four albums, one EP, and two singles. Among these works stands a notable concept album based on Dracula, showcasing not only their skill as musicians but also their flair for storytelling.
Having written a wealth of material during the COVID-19 lockdowns, Dethonator are now gearing up for the next chapter of its journey. They’re currently working on the first of two upcoming albums, with a new release expected before January 2026.
One of their most striking tracks, “Pyroclastic” (from Race Against The Sun: Part 1, 2019), recounts the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Through a barrage of molten riffs and searing vocal lines, the song captures the devastation unleashed on Pompeii as pyroclastic flows and volcanic ash buried the ancient Roman city. It’s an excellent example of how Dethonator blend history, narrative, and power into their music.
If you’re into bands like Iron Maiden, Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, or Helloween, you’ll find something to love in Dethonator’s catalogue. Their blend of old-school metal with epic songwriting appeals to fans who crave melody, narrative, and power in equal measure.
Since their beginnings in the East Midlands to their current stronghold in London’s metal scene, Dethonator have proven that classic heavy metal can still sound fresh, epic, and full of fire. With two albums in the works and a release on the horizon, their next chapter promises to be just as anthemic and ambitious.
