Smith’s Grove – Smith’s Grove Album Review

The self-titled debut album from South Jersey metallic hardcore/metalcore outfit Smith’s Grove stands out as one of the most energetic and mood-shifting crossover releases I’ve heard in a while. Formed in 2022 from the same members who played together in Bury Your Brother between 2015 and 2022, the band clearly carries a strong sense of chemistry and shared history into this record.

Musically, Smith’s Grove is deeply rooted in the American hardcore and metalcore tradition, drawing heavily from the New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia scenes. That background alone gives you a solid idea of what to expect. The hardcore influence leans closer to what many of us would call 1990s metallic hardcore—raw, aggressive, and metal-driven rather than polished modern metalcore. You can feel this especially in the song dynamics, where the hardcore backbone constantly pushes the music forward.

Another dominant layer comes from early-2000s American metalcore, particularly in the heavier riffing, with very subtle hints of nu-metal-style rises and drops appearing in certain transitions and filler riffs. What really sets the album apart is the band’s command of variation. The constant shifts between styles make their sound feel far more crossover-oriented, energetic, and genuinely fun within the hardcore/metalcore spectrum.

The band moves comfortably from crushing hardcore breakdowns to metallic solos, while the vocal approach shifts between aggressive deliveries and cleaner passages without feeling forced. Lyrically, the album stays grounded, focusing on personal struggles and everyday life, which fits the music’s direct and honest nature.

Standout tracks for me are “Strong,” “Herd Immunity,” and “Captivity.” I’d describe Smith’s Grove’s sound as crossover hardcore/metalcore, and fans of these styles should absolutely give this album a proper listen.
