Samael – Black Matter Manifesto (Music Video)

SAMAEL Returns with “Black Matter Manifesto”: A Journey Through Swiss Black Metal Iconography

Few bands possess a history as rich, transformative, and influential as Switzerland’s SAMAEL. Since their ominous awakening deep within an atomic bunker in the Swiss Alps on July 14th, 1988, brothers Vorphalack (guitar, vocals) and Xytraguptor (drums, later keyboards/composition) have steered the band through three decades of relentless evolution, transforming from raw black metal progenitors into symphonic industrial metal architects.

Now, as the calendar turns to October 30th, 2025, the extreme metal icons mark their latest chapter with the release of their brand-new single: “Black Matter Manifesto.”

The Evolution: From Raw Black to Symphonic Industrial

The early days saw the duo honing their sound through underground rehearsals, leading to the self-financed Medieval Prophecy EP. Their subsequent signing to Osmose Productions resulted in the foundational black metal classics, Worship Him (1991), and the Century Media follow-up, Blood Ritual (1992).

The true turning point arrived with the seminal 1994 release, Ceremony of Opposites. This album established a new creative division: Xy focused on music and composition, while Vorph concentrated on lyrics. This shift paved the way for the band’s signature sound. By the time they released Passage (1996)—an album they recently celebrated with the Passage – Live (2024) release—the incorporation of drum machines and keyboards had fully solidified their unique blend of black and symphonic metal.

SAMAEL continued to innovate with Eternal (1999), recorded at the legendary Mountain Studios in Montreux, followed by Reign of Light (2004) and Solar Soul (2007). They briefly revisited their early raw energy with Above (2009) and closed out two decades of evolution with the Lux Mundi (2011) album, after the Antigod EP (2010).

The current lineup—featuring Drop (who moved from bass to guitar after joining in 2014) and Ales on bass—brings a fresh, powerful dynamism, most recently heard on the critically acclaimed 2017 album, Hegemony (Napalm Records).

The New Single: “Black Matter Manifesto”

After such a profound legacy, expectations for new material are immense. SAMAEL meets this challenge head-on with “Black Matter Manifesto,” a track designed to showcase every facet of their storied career.

Mixed by the highly sought-after Sky Van Hoff (known for his work with LINDEMANN and SLEEP TOKEN), the production is guaranteed to be massive, clean, yet utterly brutal.

The track is described as:

“…a journey through the different facets of SAMAEL’s music, from explosive rhythms to ultra-heavy passages… an orgy of riffs and urgency…”

Crucially, “Black Matter Manifesto” emphasises their unique blend of black metal and industrial sounds. This single serves as a powerful reminder of SAMAEL’s distinctive position, proving that even in the most sinister and technical of musical realms, their unique sonic signature remains unparalleled. It’s an urgent, heavy slab of modern extreme metal that respects the band’s past while hurtling toward their future.

The manifesto is clear: SAMAEL is back, heavier and more dynamic than ever.
