Design Flaw – Andromeda

The song is heavy, rooted in post-metal, but we think it is uniquely positioned to appeal to people across a wide rock spectrum, from post-rock and shoegaze to post-hardcore and black metal.

‘Andromeda’ is a post-apocalyptic love song. We wrote it in 2020 at the height of the pandemic; like most people, we were stuck at home with our partners or family, desperately trying to make sense of things. Desperately trying to find a balance between hope, fear, and disillusionment. Sometimes, you need to see things through someone else’s eyes when things are bleak. Their love for the world — or their love for you — can be the remedy that makes you whole again. If you are lucky enough to have that connection with someone, hold on to it at all costs.

The song is heavy, rooted in post-metal, but we think it is uniquely positioned to appeal to people across a wide rock spectrum, from post-rock and shoegaze to post-hardcore and black metal.

“Ghost,” the debut single from Washington, DC post-hardcore band, Design Flaw, is a dark and atmospheric arrangement of soaring guitars, layered vocals, driving drums and bass, and otherworldly screams. It is heavy — but uniquely accessible — building from hypnotic grooves and vibrant hooks into a massive, cathartic crescendo.

Inspired by the emotive and genre-bending music of Alcest, Deafheaven, Glassjaw, Deftones, Failure, Russian Circles, and TV on the Radio, Design Flaw is a deeply personal reaction from four humans in flux — an artefact of their search for balance between calm and chaos, fantasy and reality, hope and fear. With parallels to defining post-hardcore bands, including Circa Survive, Nothing, Defeater, Thrice, and Holy Fawn, Design Flaw’s music is a conversation between post-rock, post-hardcore, and blackgaze — an exploration that will continue with the upcoming release of their second track, “Silence,” on November 19.

“Ghost” and “Silence” were recorded and mixed by Kenny Eaton at Mystery Ton Studios (Giraffes? Giraffes!, Scale the Summit, Time Columns), and mastered by Will Yip (Nothing, Bartees Strange, Caspian, Circa Survive, Defeater). Cover artwork by Duncan Gilchrist.
